RIVERSIDE, Iowa – Defending Iowa Open Champion, Dan Woltman sits atop the leaderboard in  after round one of the 86th Iowa Open. Woltman carded a 6-under-par 66 to edge University of Iowa men’s golfer, Alex Schaake (-5) and Matthew Jennings (-5) by one stroke.

Woltman of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin recorded seven birdies first round with one bogey that came on hole-17.

“I had a good day today,” said Woltman. “On the first hole about three feet from the hole and made birdie and it’s nice to get off to a good start. I hit it green side on three and was able to go up and down for birdie and I also birdied the par five. Making birdie on three of the first four holes kind of lets the stress go and I think I had a solid day.”

Schaake carded six birdies, five of which came on the front including back-to-back 40-foot putts.

“I got off to a pretty good start today,” said Schaake. “I missed a few birdies putts but I stayed patient and made a birdie on the fourth hole. Then I hit two birdie putts back-to-back on five and six, which really got my round going. I stayed patient all day and I am looking forward to tomorrow. I know my brother is playing well too so it is cool to have him out here too. Hopefully we can play well over the next couple of days.”

Jennings went into the back nine 3-under-par and finished strong carding 2-under-par on the back nine to tie Schaake. Chandler Blanchet, Thomas Eldridge, Barrett Kelpin, and Ottumwa’s Matthew Walker all tied for fourth place. The four of them shot 4-under-par 68s to stay in the hunt for the top of the leaderboard.

Carson Schaake is currently tied for eighth place along with two Iowa PGA Members, Chad Proehl, and Tracy Vest. The three of them each shot 3-under-par 69 Friday afternoon.

Iowa Section Champion Judd Gibb, Bryan Luedtke, Rob Riggins, and Mark Rohde are the four Senior Division leaders following a 2-under-par 70 in the first round. The four mentioned above lead the Senior Division field by five total strokes. Ankeny’s Chris Brueggeman carded a 2-over-par 74 with two birdies and four bogeys and currently sits in fifth place.

The second round of the 86th Iowa Open takes place tomorrow at Blue Top Ridge. Groups will start off Nos. 1 and 10 at 7:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. For pairings and tee times, click here.
