53rd Iowa Cup Matches Preview
Riverside, IA – The Iowa Cup continues for the 53rd time as a match play, Ryder Cup style event. It will be contested this fall at Briarwood Golf Club in Ankeny, Iowa on September 30 – October 1.
Last year’s Cup Matches ended in a tie, 10 – 10, as the second day singles matches were rained out. The PGA Professionals retained the Cup due to the tie.
The Iowa Golf Association and Iowa PGA Section, winners of the last three matches, named Honorary Captains for their teams – the late Jim Curell, (IGA) and Gene Bears, Jr. (Iowa PGA), who both have served their respective associations in many ways.
Jim Curell passed away on April 19, 2020. He will be represented by long-time friend Tom Schill as the Honorary Captain. Curell won many titles on the IGA Tour including the 1979 IGA Player of the Year. Once Curell became a Senior his game flourished, highlighted by winning the IGA Senior Player of the Year in 2010 and 2011. Curell also qualified for the US Senior Amateur in 2010 and 2011. Bears, Jr. has been a member of the PGA for over 26 years and is a PGA Quarter Century Member. He is currently the PGA Head Professional at Ankeny Golf & Country Club. Bears, Jr. is currently serving on the Iowa PGA Section Board. He is the co-Chair of the Assistants Association Committee and the co-Chair of the Iowa PGA Section Programs. In the past he was also co-Chair of the Junior Golf Committee.
“I want to thank Playing Captain Judd Gibb for selecting me as the Honorary Captain for this year’s Cup Team,” Bears, Jr. said. “I look forward to hanging with my fellow PGA Professionals and the many Amateurs that are dear friends of mine.”
The Iowa Cup Matches’ schedule will be as follows:
-Wednesday (September 30) morning 9 am Shotgun – Four-Ball Matches
-Wednesday afternoon 1:30 pm Shotgun – Foursome Matches
-Wednesday evening – Player’s dinner
-Thursday (October 1) Tee Times off #1 Tee at 8 am – Singles matches
-The Cup will be presented to the winning team following play on Thursday
