2022 Award Nominations

2022 Nomination Information


The nomination forms for the 2022 Iowa PGA Special Awards are now available.  Please click the tabs below to view eligibility and other details for each award.  Only PGA Members in good standing can nominate.  Associates are encouraged to talk to members about their suggestions for nominations and can submit supporting documentation.  

Deadline for nominations will be Sunday, August 7 at 11:59 p.m.  At that time, nominees will be asked to submit supporting documentation to the Iowa PGA Section Office no later than Sunday, August 21 at 11:59 p.m.  The Special Awards committee will review all nominations and supporting documentation and will rank and select each award winner.  Announcement of 2022 award winners will be on or around September 6.  

The All Star Pro Golf Special Awards Luncheon will be hosted by Riverside Casino & Golf Resort on Tuesday, November 15.  Special thanks to Jay Horton and All Star Pro Golf for their longtime support of this event.

Professional of the Year

Iowa PGA Professional of the Year

Description:
While this honor should be based on a professional’s entire record, emphasis should be placed on his/her performance and achievements over the past five years. This is the highest honor paid to a PGA golf professional. The following guidelines are used to determine nominees for this prestigious award:

• Career enhancement qualities and leadership abilities
• Strengths as a player / teacher / merchandiser / businessperson and over all golf professional
• Contributions made to nominee’s facility’s success
• Contributions to the game of golf at the section level
• Size and success of nominee’s operation
• Examples of golf professionals who have enhanced their careers through nominee
• Nominee’s ability to play the game of golf
• Previous Section awards or community involvement activities
• List outstanding golfers whom nominee has instructed


Requirements:

• Candidate must be a PGA Member in good standing
• Candidate must be well regarded as a model PGA Member
• Demonstration and acknowledgement as an individual of outstanding leadership and strong moral character.


Eligibility:
The following persons are ineligible:

• Class “F” or “Reserve” Members
• Apprentices or Associates

Other Considerations:
The Iowa PGA Award will be presented at the Iowa PGA Awards Ceremony, held in conjunction with the Iowa PGA Annual Meeting.

 

Assistant Professional of the Year

IOWA PGA ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR

​​Description:
​While this honor should be based on a professional’s entire record, emphasis should be placed on his/her performance and achievements over the past year. This is the highest honor paid to an assistant golf professional. The following guidelines are used to determine nominees for this prestigious award:

• Strengths as a player / teacher / merchandiser / business person and overall golf professional
• Contributions made to the success of the nominees facility
• Contributions to the game of golf
• Character of the nominee and respect from other professionals

• Examples of golf professionals who have enhanced their careers through nominee
• Nominee’s ability to play the game of golf
• Previous Section awards or community involvement activities

Eligibility:
The following persons are ineligible:

• Class "F" or "Reserve" members
• A-6 members
• Apprentices not registered in the PGM program or on suspension

The Iowa PGA Award will be presented at the Iowa PGA Awards Ceremony, held in conjunction with the Iowa PGA Annual Meeting.

Professional Development Award

IOWA PGA PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AWARD

Description:
This honor should be based on a professional’ entire record and achievements over their career. The following guidelines are used to determine nominees for this prestigious award:

• Various types of educational seminars brought to the section
• Contributions made to building the PGA image
• Leadership and networking ability
• Promotion of the game of golf within the community
• Techniques used to encourage membership support of the various seminars
• Articles written for publication in books or magazines
• Please list any sectional / nationally recognized courses attended by nominee which enhance the PGA professional.

Requirements:

• Candidate must be a PGA Member in good standing
• Candidate must be well regarded as a model PGA Member
• Demonstration and acknowledgement as an individual of outstanding leadership and strong moral character.

Eligibility:

• Class “F” or “Reserve” Members
• Apprentices or Associates

Player Development Award

IOWA PGA PLAYER DEVELOPMENT AWARD

Description:
The "PGA Player Development Award" bestows special recognition on a PGA Golf Professional, who has displayed extraordinary and exemplary contribution and achievement i n the area of player development. The award considers the PGA Professional’s growth of the game leadership, commitment at the Section and National levels in the player development arena, and the meaningful impact made at the facility.

Player Development Guidelines for Selection:

The candidate will be considered on the basis of the following:
1. Their entire PGA career with the primary emphasis on the service and commitment for Player Development.
2. The overall impact of Player Development programs implemented at the facility. This impact will include assessments of successful programming to include player introduction and retention, customer satisfaction, rounds of golf produced and revenue generated at the facility.
3. The overall quality and variety of the Player Development programming to include the broad range of opportunities for players of all skill levels, the uniqueness of ideas, and the number of best practices utilized.
4. Their use and implementation of PGA of America tools and resources such as, but not limited to Get Golf Ready, PGA Junior League, GIVE clinics, PGA Junior Academy Camps, Drive, Chip & Putt, as well as Section provided programming.
5. Any significant influence made on Golf Professionals, facilities, and employers within the area of Player Development.
6. Their performance and service to the Association, as well as their Section to include contributions to building and growing the image of the Iowa PGA Professional and The PGA through the promotion of golf and the golf industry.
7. Overall integrity and recognition as a person of outstanding character by Iowa PGA Professionals and leaders within the community.
8. Other contributions provided to The PGA.

• Demonstration and acknowledgement as an individual of outstanding leadership and strong moral character.

Bill Strausbaugh Award

Iowa PGA Bill Strausbaugh Award

Description:
While this honor should be based on a professional’s entire record, emphasis should be placed on his/her performance and achievements over the past five years. Special recognition for that PGA Professional who personally displays outstanding integrity, character and leadership through a commitment to mentoring and making significant impacts on the careers of PGA Professionals. In the spirit of the award, “mentoring” shall be defined as follows:
 
“Mentoring is supporting professionals to manage their own development so they can maximize their PGA career potential. The PGA Mentor empowers, enables, advises, challenges and encourages professionals to enhance their professional skills, strengthen their level of service, improve their work performance and become the PGA Member that they aspire to be.”

​Awarded to those who demonstrate day-to-day alternative methods of improving the employment conditions for the PGA professional. The following guidelines are used to determine nominees for this prestigious award:
 
• Involvement and significant contributions through mentoring of fellow PGA professionals and providing a significant impact on their careers.
• Possessing overall integrity and recognition as a person of outstanding character, thus furthering the values that are representative of the Association and the profession.
• Level of service to his/her section or the Association.
• Participation in Community and Association activities including involvement in civic or charitable activities within his/her community.
• Contributions to building the image of the game of golf, the PGA professional and the Association.
• Previous Section awards or community involvement activities.


Requirements:

• Candidate must be a PGA Member in good standing
• Candidate must be well regarded as a model PGA Member
• Demonstration and acknowledgement as an individual of outstanding leadership and strong moral character.

Teacher of the Year Award

Iowa PGA Teacher of the Year Award

Description:
This honor should be based on a professional’s entire record and achievements over their career. The following guidelines are used to determine nominees for this prestigious award:
• Overall impact in teaching at nominee’s facility
• Unusual, innovative or special teaching programs initiated or implemented
• Instructional articles, videos or publications written or produced
• List of outstanding golfers whom the nominee has instructed
• Involvement in junior golf activities and in the community
• Innovative contributions to golf instruction

Requirements:
• Candidate must be a PGA Member in good standing
• Candidate must be well regarded as a model PGA Member
• Demonstration and acknowledgement as an individual of outstanding leadership and strong moral character.

Eligibility:
The following persons are ineligible:
• Class “F” or “Reserve” Members
• Apprentices or Associates

Youth Player Development Award

Iowa PGA Youth Player Development Award

 
Description:
While this honor should be based on a professional’s entire record, emphasis should be placed on his/her performance and achievements over the past two years. Nominee should also promote junior golf throughout the section. The following guidelines are used to determine nominees for this prestigious award:
• Number of events hosted for junior golf
• Length of junior golf season
• Teacher / Student ratio in junior golf program
• Size and success of nominee’s junior program over the last two years
• Effect junior golf has on the facility and in the community
• Time dedicated to junior golf
• Other Section awards or community involvement activities

Requirements:
• Candidate must be a PGA Member in good standing
• Candidate must be well regarded as a model PGA Member
• Demonstration and acknowledgement as an individual of outstanding leadership and strong moral character.

Eligibility:
The following persons are ineligible:
• Class “F” or “Reserve” Members
• Apprentices or Associates

Iowa PGA Patriot Award

Iowa PGA Patriot Award

Description:
The Patriot Award is presented to an Iowa PGA Professional who personifies patriotism through the game of golf and demonstrates unwavering commitment and dedication to the men and women who have valiantly served and protected the United States of America. The following guidelines are used to determine nominees for this prestigious award:

• Contributions and support to the United States Armed Forces and its active-duty personnel and veterans.
• Proven interest, concern, and ability to provide opportunities and experience for active-duty personnel and veterans to learn and play golf.
• Demonstration and acknowledgement as an individual of outstanding leadership and strong moral character.

Requirements:
• Candidate must be a PGA Member in good standing
• Candidate must be well regarded as a model PGA Member
• Demonstration and acknowledgement as an individual of outstanding leadership and strong moral character.

Deacon Palmer Award

DEACON PALMER AWARD

Description:
The "Deacon Palmer Award" bestows special recognition on a PGA Golf Professional who personally displays outstanding integrity, character and leadership, in the effort to overcome a major obstacle in their life. This individual is an unsung hero/heroine at their facility and in their community, who serves to inspire, empower and assist others, both inside and outside of the game.

Requirements:

• Candidate must be a PGA Member in good standing
• Candidate must be well regarded as a model PGA Member
• Demonstration and acknowledgement as an individual of outstanding leadership and strong moral character.


Eligibility:
The following persons are ineligible:

• Class “F” or “Reserve” Members
• Apprentices or Associates

Other Considerations:
The Iowa PGA Award will be presented at the Iowa PGA Awards Ceremony, held in conjunction with the Iowa PGA Annual Meeting.

Sales Representative of the Year Award

Iowa PGA Sales Representative of the Year Award

Description:
This honor should be based on a vendor’s entire record. This is the highest honor paid to a Sales Representative. The following guidelines should be used to determine nominees for this prestigious award:

Sales Ingretity
• Strengths in service and communication
• Contributions made to nominee’s company’s success
• Contributions to the game of golf at the Section Level
• Size and success of nominee’s line
• Sales call rotation and customer interaction
• Previous awards or community involvement activities


Requirements:
• Candidate DOES NOT have to be a PGA Member
• Demonstration and acknowledgement as an individual of outstanding leadership and strong moral character.

Private Merchandiser of the Year Award

The Merchandiser of the Year Award is designed to recognize those PGA Professionals who have excelled as a businessperson / merchandiser in the promotion of golf. The PGA honors PGA Professionals in three categories: Private, Public and Resort facilities.

Private Merchandiser of the Year Criteria:

1. Criteria to Measure

a. Demonstration of skill in planning and promotion of sales by presenting products to his/her market on a timely basis, and through the use of specialized merchandising techniques that include display and advertising.

 


Requirements:

• Candidate must be a PGA Member in good standing
• Candidate must be well regarded as a model PGA Member
• Demonstration and acknowledgement as an individual of outstanding leadership and strong moral character.


Eligibility:
The following persons are ineligible:
