First Swing Learn to Golf Event for Iowa Veterans

September 6, 2011- Waterloo, Iowa – First Swing Learn to Golf will be offered to Iowa Veterans in a full day event on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at the Airport National Golf Course in Cedar Rapids.  First Swing is adaptive golf for those with physical challenges which include wheelchair participants, amputees, stroke and brain injury survivors and more.  First Swing is a program of the National Amputee Golf Association and brings the disabled population back to the game of golf and to the social aspects that golf affords to anyone.  The event will include hands on instruction and tips, followed by lunch and an afternoon of open golf for anyone attending the morning session.

The First Swing Learn to Golf event is made possible through grant funding from a United States Olympic Opportunity Grant that was awarded to OPAF & The First Clinics, (www.opfund.org) a nonprofit organization based in Waterloo which hosts a variety of adapted sports and recreational clinics across the country for people with physical challenges.  This will be the first of three First Swing Learn to Golf Clinics for Iowa veterans, with the two remaining being held in Dubuque at Derby Grange Golf on Monday, May 7, 2012 and at Copper Creek Golf Club in Pleasant Hill, Iowa on Friday and Saturday, June 22-23, 2012.  Follow up from the First Swing Learn to Golf event will be handled with our partner, Sportability of Iowa, (www.sportabilityofiowa.com) located in the Cedar Rapids area.

If participants have their own clubs, we ask that they bring them.  Clubs will be available for everyone to try and the chance to put into practice on the golf course will also be available.  Refreshments, giveaways and the chance to spend an afternoon with the community make this a winning event!

There is NO CHARGE for First Swing/Learn to Golf, but we do ask that if you are interested, please register with OPAF & The First Clinics at 319-235-4318.  First Swing is a program of the National Amputee Golf Association and has been introducing or re-introducing people across the country to the game of golf for over 25 years.
