Participating Iowa Section PGA Professionals by Region

Western / Central Iowa

Gary Babcock, PGA
Lake Panorama National GC, Panora, IA – (641) 755-2024
Teaching Style: Any change made to a students swing must have a positive effect on impact.  In my opinion, anything else may make a swing look nicer, but if it has no bearing on impact, why bother?  This is why I fix every student’s swing by starting in this order: ball-flight, impact, and swing plane.

Sarah Bidney, PGA
Jester Park GC & Toad Valley GC, Granger, IA – (515) 999-2903 & (515) 967-9575
Bio: Having held PGA teaching positions in Naples, FL and Park City, UT, I am excited to return to Iowa.
Teaching Style: Instruction will always be individualized, easy to understand, and based on your goals.  Not only will I provide “how” to make a change but the “why” behind it.  As an iClub staff member, swing motion analysis is also available along with V1 video analysis.  “Here’s to better, more enjoyable golf!”

Mark Burke, PGA
Willow Creek GC, West Des Moines, IA – (515) 285-4558
Bio: I enjoy teaching the game of golf to all ages and abilities.  I believe the game should be fun, so I try to make learning the game fun as well.
Teaching Style: Whether beginner or professional, my focus is always on the fundamentals.  In addition to teaching the golf swing, I believe that it is my duty as a golf professional to teach people how to play the game of golf.

Ross deBuhr, PGA
Hyperion Field Club, Johnston, IA – (515) 276-1596

Mark Egly, PGA
Des Moines Driving Range, Des Moines, IA(515) 289-1703

David Gantt, PGA
Longview Golf Center, Grimes, IA(515) 986-9799
Bio: 2007 Iowa PGA Teacher of the Year ~ 16 years of teaching experience
Teaching Style: As the busiest PGA teacher in the state for many years, I have developed the ability to adjust the teaching style to the student.  I consider the students ability, goals and learning style.  I can style the lesson to be as technical or as simple as needed based on the students preference.  I also have computer video swing anaylsis available.  Lessons go rain or shine as Longview has the largest outdoor range in the state and the only indoor golf dome in the Des Moines area.

Jerry Johnson, PGA
Elmwood CC, Marshalltown, IA(641) 753-8111
Bio: I have been a PGA member for 29 years and have taught golf for 32 years.  I have taught golfers of all ages and abilities.
Teaching Style: I do not have a “style” of teaching, except to analyze a person’s game and go to the #1 cause of his or her problems, correct that, and then build good fundamentals from there.

Nichole Kentner, PGA
Golf Etc. for Women, West Des Moines, IA – (515) 263-1600
Bio: I have had the opportunity to instruct at some of the most beautiful golf courses on the east coast and in Germany.  In 2001, I graduated with a degree in Business Administration, Marketing, and a concentration in Professional Golf Management, and I also brought home a ring from winning a NCAA Championship my senior year.  After college, I started out my career instructing with Peggy Kirk Bell at Pine Needles Resort in North Carolina.  In 2004, I made the big move over the pond to Heidelberg, Germany to fulfill the role as Assistant Manager for the U.S. Army Europe HQ Golf Course.  During the 2005-2006 golf seasons I was a golf instructor and Head Golf Professional at Basin Harbor Club, a 4th generation family owned resort on Lake Champlain in Vermont.  Now, I have moved back to Iowa to start my own business in promoting the game of golf to all kinds of people from all walks of life.

Dick Lane, PGA
Urbandale G & CC, Urbandale, IA – (515) 276-2983
Teaching Style: Teaching philosophy is based on the theory of keeping the swing very simple.  Teaching the basic fundamentals is our foundation to making the swing simple.  Adapting each person’s abilities to their past experience is one of our main emphases.  I have a very strong tradition of teaching skilled players but really enjoy getting results for new players.

Jason Marvelli, PGA
Indianola CC, Indianola, IA (515) 961-3303
Teaching Style: I typically like to work with what the student has.  I’m not one to completely “overhaul” ones swing.  Most of my students need the basic fundamentals.  I do like to see a proper grip before one leaves a lesson.

Ryan Rinnels, PGA
Wakonda Club, Des Moines, IA(515) 285-1934
Bio: 2006 Assistant Golf Professional of the Year
Teaching Style: I believe that all players are doing something correct in their golf swing and I want to build on that.  I have great rapport with my students and want them to feel as comfortable as possible during the lesson.  Golf is a truly wonderful game and I want to get as many people playing golf as I can.

Dave Schneider, PGA
Wakonda Club, Des Moines, IA – (515) 285-1934
Bio: I have been teaching the game professionally to all age spans and abilities for over 15 years.  I have taught the game at places that I have been employed including Illinois, Arizona, Hawaii, and Iowa encountering virtually all swing types.
Teaching Style: My philosophy and passion centers around the student understanding and enjoying the game to the best of my ability.  In addition, you will not get through a session with me without understanding how important the short game is to the overall enjoyment of the game.

John Shawver, PGA
Newton CC, Newton, IA – (641) 792-6619
Teaching Style: My style of teaching comes from a player’s perspective, which means I am always learning as a player and a teacher.  I have experience in private lessons, groups, clinics, corporate outings and golf schools.  My goal is to make you a better player using the amount of time you have avaliable to practice and play.  I strongly believe in keeping lessons simple and fun.  Becoming a better player is simply a matter of enjoying the learning process.

Brad Sponseller, PGA
Westwood GC, Newton, IA – (641) 792-3087

Gary Sutton, PGA
Macomb CC, Macomb, IA – (309) 837-2132
Teaching Style: After initial introduction and emphasis on proper grip and stance, I am a strong promoter of balance and relaxation.  One thought at a time is used to eliminate tension and promote a full swinging motion.  Reputation is particulary based on ability to take a beginner and after a 5 lesson program over a 3 week period make an individual look, feel and swing like a golfer with motivating success.  This approach is equally effective in group or individual sessions.

Tom Tays, PGA
AH Blank GC, Des Moines, IA – (515) 285-0864
Teaching Style: Most golfers are just one or two key ideas from really enjoying their games more and lowering their scores.  If you’re hitting the ball at all, you’re doing something correctly.  My job is to identify that which you are doing well and then make the most efficient corrections to your technique that will make you a better ball striker.  I work with what you have, not insist you fit a pre-conceived model or method.  Just look at the variety of swings that succeed on the PGA Tour.  Your mental approach is also vitally important.  At all times we will work with your self-management and psychological approach to golf.

Zachary Vervaecke, PGA
Jester Park GC, Granger, IA – (515) 999-2903

Jim Webb, PGA

Bio: 2008 Iowa PGA Assistant Player of the Year
Teaching Style: If you’re looking for a PGA Tour golf swing, I am not your guy.  I believe that we all have our own strengths in our own swings and I will teach you how to get the golf ball in the hole in the fewest amount of swings as possible.  Let me work with what God has given you and see if we can make it better and more enjoyable!

Tim Chrzan, PGA
Dick’s Sporting Good, Cedar Rapids, IA  – (319) 743-3066
Teaching Style: I believe a simple approach is best that is improving what skill set a student possesses rather than trying to rebuild the entire golf swing.  I like to give less to work on rather than more.

Mark Davis, PGA
Hunters Ridge GC, Marion, IA – (319) 377-3500
Teaching Style: Teaching style is based on solid fundamentals of golf with an emphasis on swinging of the golf club and not hitting a golf ball.  Need to have an understanding of grip, stance and alignment to be able to have a constant repeatable swing.
