Name: Robert P. Moreland
Year Turned Professional: 1963
Facility and Job Title: Ottumwa Country Club/Golf Professional
What was your motivation to become a PGA Professional?
I always enjoyed all aspects of the golf business; playing, teaching, conducting tournaments, merchandising. The best way to participate in all of these was to become a PGA Professional.
What is your specialty in the golf business?
Teaching junior golfers and helping them reach their full potential.
What are just a few of your accomplishments?
Five-time Iowa PGA Player of the Year; ten-time Iowa PGA Senior Player of the Year; Iowa PGA Golf Professional of the Year 1988; Iowa PGA Junior Golf Leader 1995; Private Course Merchandiser 2002.
What was your greatest moment in golf?
Inducted into Iowa Golf Hall of Fame 2006.
What or who has had the greatest impact on your career?
My father who taught me how to play golf and showed me how you should live your life.
Besides golf, what else do you enjoy?
Fishing and spending time with my grandchildren.
If you could play any golf course in the world, which one would it be and who would complete your foursome?
Aronimink Golf Club, site of Senior PGA. My father Gus Moreland, Lee Trevino and Ben Hogan.
If you could give lessons to anyone in the world who would it be and what advice would you give?
Any junior golfer. Learn the basic fundamentals and when you have a swing problem, try to learn how to fix it yourself. That is the only way you are going to learn your swing. If you can’t fix it in a reasonable amount of time, see a PGA Professional.
What is your favorite golf instruction tip?
Square the club face to your target and then take your stance. Most amateur golfers don’t line up correctly which leads to most of their problems.

I played against Bob in 1962 when he was at Richwoods High School in Peoria. I played at Pekin High School. My dad had played against his dad in the 40s which my dad had told me about. One of my biggest thrills was meeting his dad one day while I was playing with Bobby in a medal play high school tournament when his dad came out on the course. I had asked Bobby about his dad and maybe he asked his dad to come out to say hi to me. In the 90s I was playing in an amateur tournament in southwest fl when I saw a picture of the 1934 Masters participants in the clubhouse and saw his dad in the picture.

I played with Bobby on the State Championship team from Richwoods High School in Peoria and won a lot money teaming with both Bobby and his brother Steve.
We had some great times and if Bobby sees this, drop me an
e-mail. I’d love to catch up.
