10th Annual TaylorMade-adidas Ashworth Iowa PGA Las Vegas Pro-Am

TaylorMade-adidas Ashworth

The 10th Annual TaylorMade-adidas Ashworth Iowa PGA Las Vegas Pro-Am was held February 20-22 in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Three rounds were contested at three different golf courses; Desert Pines Golf Club, Dragon Ridge Country Club, and Revere Golf Club.

The format for the event was a quota system which adjusts following each round based on each player’s score.  The overall team winner is the team that accumulates the most points above their total quota.  If no team exceeds their quota, then the winners will be the team that is closest to achieving their overall quota.  Each team was comprised of an Iowa PGA Section Professional and four amateurs.

The Iowa PGA would like to thank Tod Puetz and Mike Long of TaylorMade-adidas Ashworth for their continued sponsorship of this tournament.  These gentlemen provided a new TaylorMade RocketBallz Driver to each player on the top three teams.  They will also provide nice tee gifts for each participant.

Returning to the event were the defending champions comprised of PGA Member, Darin Justice, and amateurs, Bob Brooks, Steve Hermann, Jeff Scharingson, and Kurt Wickiser.  In last year’s event, these gentlemen won the tournament by a total of 16.375 points.  Click HERE for last year’s results.

Light Competitions Reach All Skill Levels

Thursday, February 16, 2012

Bryan Haas, the 2008, 2009 and 2011 Iowa PGA Section Merchandiser of the Year for Resort Facilities, is the PGA director of golf at Blue Top Ridge at Riverside (Iowa) Casino & Golf Resort.

Light Competitions Reach All Skill Levels

Bryan Haas on the importance of light competitions:

There are two different kinds of female golfers: those who enjoy competition and those who do not. Typically, these two groups don’t mix when they are at the course, and I have struggled over the years to find ways to get these two groups to co-exist. A number of years ago I started holding “Girls Night Out” events, which I continue to do to this day for local women who play at our resort. While these events feature a competition, we try to keep it light in order to reach all female golfers. We give prizes to the winners and have the typical skill-based awards, such as longest drive, but we also have awards that are outside the box that anyone could win. For instance, we will give a prize to the golfer who is the first to hit a ball in a particular bunker, which they won’t even know about until it happens. There are also awards, such as longest putt, that tend to be a mix of skill and luck, and we have a drawing for prizes during dinner so anyone who participates in the event has a real chance to leave with something. Dinner also helps with the social aspect of the event, which tends to be very important for the ladies.

Bryan Haas on the business impact of light competitions:

When I first started these events we had roughly 12 ladies each participate month. Now we have more than 20 every month. We charge $30 to participate, which we think is affordable and encourages more ladies to want to bring their friends the next time. We also change formats each month and try to mix the two types of players as much as possible. Once the two sides start playing together, the non-competitive players slowly start to become more competitive. As a result, they come back to our resort more often and play more rounds.

February 2012 PGA PROfile-Zack Vervaecke-Sponsored by Harris Golf Cars

Name: Zack Vervaecke

College/University: Black Hawk Junior College and Southern Illinois University

Year turned Professional: 2008

Facility and Job Title: Jester Park Golf Course PGA Head Professional

Please give a summary of your Background and credentials
I started out as an Assistant for the City of Rock Island at Highland Springs and
Saukie Municipal Golf Courses. Got out of the business for about 3 years before
returning as an Assistant at Davenport Country Club. I was an assistant at DCC for
5 years before becoming the Head Professional at Jester Park Golf Course where I
have been for the past 4 years.

What was your motivation to become a PGA Professional?
I have always loved the game of golf since a very early age. When I left the
business for three years, I worked various jobs from changing oil and fixing tires, to
cleaning industrial ovens and oxidizers, running CNC machines, and finally
construction. It was my last job working construction that I realized how much I
really missed everything that the golf business had to offer. I made a few phone
calls and ended up taking the job at Davenport Country Club nine years ago. I can say
without question that I am glad I got back into the business.

What is your specialty in the golf business?
Jester Park is leased by a small Golf Management group called Green Golf
Partners. I know that I was skeptical going to work for a Golf Management group
but since doing so it has opened my eyes to all aspects of the business. The
amount of resources at my disposal helps me make precise, prompt-to decisions on
marketing, equipment, best practices, and much more.

Please list any accomplishments (Awards, Certifications, and Tournaments.)
2010 Iowa Open Champion

What was your greatest moment in golf?
Winning the 2010 Iowa Open and becoming a Class A PGA Professional in 2008

What or who has had the greatest impact on your career?
My father who brought the game of golf into my life, my first mentor Kevin Kwak,
and Second Mentor John Panek.

Besides golf, what else do you enjoy?
Fishing, walking, spending time with my daughter, and any recreational activity.

If you could play any golf course in the world, which one would it be and who would complete your foursome?
Augusta National no question!! Me, Tiger, President Obama, and my dad.

If you could give lessons to anyone in the world who would it be and
what advice would you give?
Boy is that a tough one….I would say any young aspiring junior golfer that is
willing to put in time and effort into his/her swing/game to make themselves better.
I would let them know that everything isn’t always about mechanics/positions/and
looks…..sometimes you have to learn how to put the ball in the hole and make a
number.

What is your favorite golf instruction tip?
You can sometimes be your own best friend on the golf course…..or your own
worst enemy….the decision is yours to make.
