Iowa PGA Parent Junior #2 Championship

The Iowa PGA Parent Junior #2 Championship was held on Sunday, August 9 with 102 participants. Stormy weather caused delays but participants enjoyed the competition and company anyway. There were 22 competitors in the 9-hole alternate shot competition. These competitors played the Walter’s Ridge Par 3 Golf Course. The 18-hole division played a scramble format at Pheasant Ridge GC. Thank you to sponsor Kevin Dorrington and Wilson Golf for providing a hat and sleeve of golf balls for each participant. Also a huge thank you to John Bermel, Head PGA Professional, Adam Luehmann, Assistant Professional and all the Pheasant Ridge Staff for their support in hosting this event – especially through the multiple rain delays.

What was your motivation to become a PGA Professional?
Couldn’t think of a better job than to work at a golf course.

What is your specialty in the golf business?
I am passionate about teaching the game and working with the best people in the country. To provide PGA Tour quality experiences to my members and guests.

What are a few of your accomplishments in the golf business?
2008 Iowa Section Merchandiser of the year; 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 I was part of a team that was selected as “Golf World Top 100 Golf Shops.”

What was your greatest moment in golf?
Becoming a member of the PGA of America.

What or who has had the greatest impact on your career?
My father, Dennis Stoterau.

Besides golf, what else do you enjoy?
Hunting, fishing, Minnesota Vikings, spending time with my wife Katie and three daughters, Ella, Addie and Audrey.

If you could play any golf course in the world, which one would it be and who would complete your foursome?
Royal County Down Golf Club with my wife Katie, and my brothers Ben and Nick.

If you could give lessons to anyone in the world who would it be and what advice would you give?
There’s nothing more gratifying than taking an average golfer and watching him or her improve or shoot in the 70’s the first time. Advice: patience.

What is your favorite golf instruction tip?
I believe in teaching from the ground up and that your legs are the most important aspect of the swing. If I had one move it would be to quote the great Harry Penick: “to start your downswing let your weight shift to the left foot while bringing your right elbow back down to your body.”

Iowa PGA Junior Tour Championship

The 2009 Iowa PGA Junior Tour Championship was held at Otter Creek GC on August 5-6 with 150 participants. This is the final event for the 2009 Iowa Junior Tour. It has been a great season. Congratulations to all the juniors for a great season. The Iowa PGA would like to thank Otter Creek GC, Kevin Beard, head PGA Professional for their support in hosting this event. Iowa Section PGA Professional Championship – August 3-4th, 2009

Judd Gibb, 2009 Iowa PGA Section Champion

Congratulations to Judd Gibb, Assistant Coach for the Iowa State University Men’s Golf Team for winning the 2009 Iowa PGA Section Championship. Judd defeated Curt Schnell of Okoboji View Golf Course on the first sudden death playoff hole after the both were tied at 3-under-par, 213 after regulation play. This was Judd’s first Section Championship title.

The 2009 Iowa Section PGA Professional Championship was held at The Harvester Golf Club in Rhodes, IA on August 3rd and 4th. 65 Iowa Section PGA Professional competed in the 54-hole Championship. The low five golfers advance to the 2010 PGA Professional National Championship to be held June 27 – 30, 2010 (Sunday-Wednesday), at French Lick Resort in French Link, Indiana. This year’s champion will also earn a spot in the PGA TOUR John Deere Classic which will be contested at TPC @ Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois in July of 2010.

Competitors played 27 holes on Monday, August 3rd and another 27 holes on Tuesday, August 4th. Detailed tournament information and pairings may be found by clicking HERE. Media and public is welcome to attend and admission is free.

Iowa PGA Elmcrest Invitational

The 1st annual Iowa PGA Elmcrest Invitational was held Monday-Tuesday, August 3-4 at Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids, IA. This new event was created with the help of Larry Gladson, Frank Anderson and the membership of Elmcrest CC and had 56 participants. Members of the Iowa Junior Tour were given the great opportunity to play one of the nicest private facilities in the state of Iowa. The Iowa PGA would like to thank Larry Gladson and Frank Anderson, PGA Professionals, and the entire Elmcrest CC Membership for their support. The Iowa PGA would also like to thank the John Jacobs Memorial Fund for their contribution as presenting sponsor. This sponsorship provided trophies for the event.
